Tobacco heiress and philanthropist Doris Duke, late in her life, paid the bail of Imelda Marcos, the kleptocratic first lady of the Philippines, who was being detained in Manhattan, and nobody is quite sure why. Shangri-La was developed as part of the Duke House Operas, a presentation of NYU Tisch and the American Opera Project.
Casting: 1 Soprano, 1 Alto, 1 Bass
Notes
The premiere of Shangri-La was postponed indefinitely due to the covid-19 pandemic. However, we were able to work with the cast to create a demo recording, below. This performance features Melissa Harvey as Doris Duke, Brittany Fowler as Imelda Marcos, and Kofi Hayford as Jimmy.
