HAYMARKET

A NEW FOLK MUSICAL

Music by David Kornfeld

Book and Lyrics by Alex Higgin-Houser

Haymarket: a New Folk Musical tells the gripping true story of Chicago’s infamous Haymarket Affair of 1886. Anarchist labor leaders clash with a brutal police force in a battle for survival, and violent rebels armed with dynamite threaten to destroy the labor movement before it can begin.

Told by the Anarchist Folk Band, a troupe of actor-musicians, Haymarket draws on a rich tradition of Americana, bluegrass, and roots sounds, weaving a musical tapestry that is at once contemporary, period, and timeless. As the story traces the contours of events that gave rise to today’s socio-political landscape, we witness the transfer of power from Albert Parsons, a believer in patience and pacifism, to Lucy Parsons, a firebrand advocating for the power of action over good intentions.

Casting: 6m/4w, actor-musicians
